Bran Sands Long Sea Outfall
Plans are currently being advanced to move the existing treated wastewater discharge point from our Bran Sands Treatment Works away from the Tees Estuary to reduce nitrogen loading in this sensitive catchment. While this treated water is clean and safe, it does contain nutrients that can lead to excess seaweed growth on the sensitive mudflats, and our investment will protect those sensitive areas. Following extensive discussions with DEFRA, the Environment Agency, and Natural England, the regulators have directed us to construct a long sea outfall (LSO), moving this discharge to a point 4.5km out to sea. This reduces the risk of excess seaweed growth on mudflats within the estuary and will cause no impact to the receiving coastal environment.
The environment is at the heart of everything we do as a business, and we are currently in the early stages of developing this project, which will help to protect and improve habitats in the Tees Estuary and Cleveland Coast Special Protection Area.
