Willington Sewage Treatment Works

Willington Sewage Treatment Works

As part of the Water Industry National Environmental Programme (WINEP), we will be carrying out essential work to enhance the performance of Willington wastewater treatment works, which discharges to the River Wear.

We will be installing chemical dosing plant and a new treatment stage to enable the site to meet the forthcoming phosphorous discharge consent.

The improvement works will cost around £6.7 million, and it’s one of many sites within the region to receive this upgrade.

Phosphorous is a nutrient and can cause algae to grow in watercourses, reducing biodiversity and river water quality.

The works will be undertaken by our supply partners, Costain, who will be undertaking the design and construction of this project on behalf of Northumbrian Water.

Start Date: November 2025

Estimated End Date: February 2027

Partner: Costain

Investment Value: £6.7 million
