Stressholme Environmental Improvements

Project Overview

We’re investing more than Β£40 million in Darlington to help improve water quality in the River Skerne and River Tees, benefiting both local communities and the environment.

Ground investigations are planned from August 2026. Subject to the current programme, work at Stressholme Sewage Treatment Works is expected to begin in March 2027, with further improvements across the area starting from June 2027.

The project will help reduce storm overflow spills, improve river water quality, and protect the local environment. We will work closely with Darlington Borough Council and other local partners to minimise disruption and keep communities informed throughout the project. Where any impacts are expected, we will provide advance notice to help customers plan ahead.

We're also aiming to hold an event in September 2026 to share more information about the project and the benefits it will deliver.
