South Stanley and Craghead Flood Reduction

Project Overview

We’re investing in work across the area to protect the environment by reducing flood risk and spills from storm overflows. This will be delivered across three projects.

The Northumbria Integrated Drainage Partnership (NIDP) is an award-winning partnership bringing together local authorities across the North East, the Environment Agency and Northumbrian Water to help reduce flood risk and improve drainage for communities.

Following this work we have successfully bid for funding to undertake construction workin and around the Park Road area of South Moor, to separate the surface water network from what are currently combined sewers, which take sewage from homes and businesses as well as rainwater.

Further work is planned in and around the Avon Road area of South Stanley, while Northumbrian Water is also investing in additional work to reduce spills from storm overflows and protect the environment.

Community Hub Admin Team 2 weeks ago We'd like to share the latest update on our ongoing work across the South Stanley area. Thank you for your continued patience and support while we carry out these improvements.📍 Park Road Area✅ Rydal AvenueWork on Rydal Avenue has now been completed. The road has been fully reinstated and is open as normal.🔨 Parmeter StreetWe're continuing to install the new combined sewer along Parmeter Street. This work is progressing well and is expected to be completed next week.🚧 Mundell Street Road ClosureFollowing this, work will move onto Mundell Street. A road closure will be in place from Tuesday 1 September until the end of November 2026 to allow this work to be carried out safely.🚦 Hustledown RoadWork has restarted on Hustledown Road, where we're installing new surface water drainage. Two-way traffic lights will remain in place while these works are completed.🚧 Keswick RoadPhase 2 of our works on Keswick Road is now underway. A road closure remains in place while we install new surface water drainage.📍 Avon Road Area✅ Marx Crescent WestDrainage work has now been completed, and the road has been reinstated and reopened.✅ Marx Crescent EastDrainage work has also been completed here, with the road now reinstated and open for use.🌱 Kier Hardie AvenueOur team has started installing drainage across the grassed area on Kier Hardie Avenue.🔨 Tweed Terrace to Tees CrescentThe drainage section running from the rear of Tweed Terrace to the junction of Tees Crescent is now complete. Community Hub Admin Team 2 months ago HelloI hope everyone is well and has been enjoying the lovely weather we have been having.An update on our works around Stanley are as follows:Avon Road:The attenuation tank works are currently on hold whilst we wait for some Ground Investigation results returning. We have commenced the drainage run on the west side of Marx Crescent where a road closure will be in place from Monday 27th July 2026 for up to 3 weeks.We're continuing works from the rear of Avon Road up Tweed Terrace where we are currently working on the 4-way junction to install a new manhole. We will continue to work our way North as works progress. Reinstatement works are being carried out this week on the road to the rear of Avon Road and Tweed Terrace which will see the road being reopened.Park Road:The combined sewer installation is progressing along Charlotte Street with works due to commence on Parmeter street week commencing 27 August 2026 where a road closure will be in place for approximately 4 weeks.The final manhole has been constructed on the verge on Hustledown road where we have been working on the Surface Water Sewer. Reinstatement works are to commence and all fencing to be removed.We're progressing well on Rydal Avenue, and expected to be complete in early August.The basins on the green space on Greenlands is now complete and fencing will stay in place until the grass is established.Should you've any questions please comment on this page or contacts us at NWL.Customer@esh.uk.com. Community Hub Admin Team 3 months ago Park RoadThe surface water separation works are around 60% complete at the top of Hustledown Road. Traffic management will be temporarily removed on Sunday 28 June 2026. Land cultivation and footpath reinstatement is in progress. The combined sewer installation is also now complete.The combined sewer installation is now complete along Rydal Avenue. We've now started working on the surface water drainage along Rydal Avenue where a road closure will be in place for approximately 6 weeks.Sustainable Urban Drainage and Storage Tank is now complete within Greenlands.From Monday 29 June 2026 a road closure will be in place at the bottom of Charlotte Street for approximately 4 weeks. Community Hub Admin Team 4 months ago Hello everyonePlease see below an update on our works around the Avon Road and Park Road areas.Avon Road Progress has been a steady start due to the number of services we've encountered after making the connection to the existing drain. The road crossing is now installed to a point, so the attenuation tank can be installed on Lenin Terrace.We're making good progress on the diverted foul sewer, running up Marx Crescent with all topsoil stripped and drainage installation in progress.We'll have more updates to come over the next few weeks so please keep your eye out for them. Park RoadWe're currently working on the upsizing of the combined sewer on Rydal Avenue which is due to completed in the coming weeks.The storage tank and flow control chamber has now been installed within the Greenlands grassed area with only the headwalls and reinstatements to complete.We continue with surface water separation on Hustledown Road grass verge and recommence with combined sewer upsizing at the top of Hustledown Road.Should you have any questions please comment on this page or contacts us at NWL.Customer@esh.uk.com.Kind regardsThe Project Team

Community Hub Admin Team 5 months ago Hello everyone,Please see below an update of works taking place around South Moor.First off, we would like to commend South Moor Together, Richie and Jake for taking the time to arrange such a successful Big Spring Clean event and bringing the local community together to help make South Moor a better place. A big well done also to the local community who took the time out of their weekend to lend a helping hand. We think the work this group put into their community on a regular basis is something to be admired. We were pleased to help where we can by providing skips and use of the Old School Site. Our compound area is now in place on the green space of Hollyhill Gardens West.A road closure will be in place on Lenin Terrace as of Monday 27th April 2026 until approximately October 2026. Community Hub Admin Team 5 months ago Hi everyone, As part of the Northumbria Integrated Drainage Partnership (NIDP), Northumbrian Water, Durham County Council and the Environment Agency are working with communities to proactively reduce the risk of flooding to homes and businesses and protect the environment.As part of this commitment, we are working with our supply partner, Esh-Stantec, to undertake work to improve the performance of the sewer network in South Stanley. Phase one of the works is well underway in the Park road area, whilst phase two of the scheme will begin on 7 April 2026, investing a further £3.8 million into improving the sewer network. This essential work will ensure that the sewer network continues to serve the community effectively and reducing the risk of flooding in your area.The work will take around 13 months to complete and will involve the construction of new sewers to transfer surface water, from roof and road areas to the Stanley Burn. The work will take place in the streets around Avon Road, Wansbeck Avenue, Tees Crescent, Tweed Terrace, Kier Hardie Avenue, Marx Crescent and Lenin Terrace. To enable us to undertake the work safely, we will need to temporarily close some roads in the areas where we are working and during these times, parking will be restricted. We will notify you in advance of any road closures that are required and we will maintain pedestrian access to your property at all times. We also need to remove two trees in the grassed area north of Lenin Terrace and one tree along Avon Road, and we will be replacing these with new trees after our work has been completed.In addition to this work, we will also be undertaking site investigations to help with the development of solutions for further improvements to the sewer network, across the South Stanley and Craghead area.We will be setting up a site compound and materials storage area in a grassed area adjacent to Holly Hill Gardens, and this will be reinstated on completion. A plan is enclosed showing where the work will take place. Please be assured that we are working closely with Durham County Council to minimise our impact on the local community. The work went well and was completed before expected.We are currently working along Rydal Avenue upsizing the combined network. A rolling road closure will be in place over the next couple of months, which may require residents to take alternative routes.Phase 1 is imminently complete on Keswick Road and Windermere Terrace for the new combined Sewer. Traffic lights will be in place until 30th January 2026.We continue the installation of the combined sewer on Keswick Street working towards the top of Windermere Terrace.The works on Pine Street heading towards John Street continue as we install connections for the surface water separation.We will be carrying out some excavation works within the grassed area, south of Rydal Avenue to locate and terminate redundant electric cables. Community Hub Admin Team 9 months ago Hi everyone,Crews continue to install new 375mm combined sewer and new manhole on the grass verge on Hustledown Road.Works on Pine Street are progressing, and reinstatements have been carried out to accommodate the South Stanley light switch on taking place on Saturday 6th December 2025. We will then install a new manhole and reinstate before the Christmas break. The combined sewer installation has progressed up Kewsick Road with work currently at the intersection of School Lane. All road closures will be lifted over the Christmas period and will be put back in place when we return in January. We will recommence in the following areas: Keswick street up from school lane junction We will open the old school yard as a compound. Pine street leading to john street Hustledown road works will commence in the bus stop opposite the site compound entrance. We are temporarily tarmacking the footpaths as we go, so that we can reopen for residents.We are progressing on Pine Street installing the surface water drainage and are extending the road closure further up pine street to the junction towards John Street.We are still progressing on the Foul Water drainage on Keswick Road. Work is ongoing on Park Road leading to Pine Street and John Street as we install 85m of new surface water sewers and install new manholes and upgrade existing manholes.We recently wrote to residents to advise work is due to commence on Monday 27th October on Rydal Avenue, up to Windermere Terrace to install 150m of new combined sewers and install new manholes and upgrade existing manholes. Work has now been moved to the following week where a road closure will be in place from Monday 3rd November on the junction of Rydal Avenue and Keswick Road. Go Vocal Admin1 year ago The NIDP Partnership has completed Stage 1 and 2 of our study process in South Stanley & Craghead investigating integrated flood risk.We have identified four areas which we are going to take forward to Stage 3, these are Park Road, Avon Road, Cookson Place and The Middles. The next steps will see us carrying out further survey and investigation work on site, completing an outline design and submitting our funding applications.
