Ponteland Wastewater Improvements

As part of our commitment to improve the environment and to protect our region’s rivers and coast, we are planning to invest up to £5 million in the Ponteland area. This will reduce storm overflow spills into the River Pont and improve our wastewater network. This is one of many sites within the region to receive this upgrade.

Start Date: January 2027

Estimated End Date: March 2028

Partner: Esh-Stantec

Investment Value: up to £5 million

Traffic Information:

While initial investigations are being carried out, some temporary traffic management may be required to keep our teams safe. Further information will be shared on this page and we will be in touch directly with customers affected.

Investing in Drainage

We have recently launched a project which will see up to £5 million invested in the Ponteland area, over the next five years. This project will improve the water quality of the River Pont by reducing the number of storm overflow spills.

We are currently carrying out survey work within the area to better understand the current performance of our sewerage network. This will help us to plan where to carry out improvement work on our network.

While we are still developing our final improvement proposals, we can share examples of what they will likely include and look like. It is likely that the solution will involve a combination of surface water separation from the combined sewer network, sustainable drainage solutions such as nature-based rainwater storage, rain gardens, and tree pits along with more conventional drainage improvements such as storage tanks and increasing the size of existing pipework and chambers.
