Pelton Environmental Improvements

At Northumbrian Water, we’re committed to protecting and improving the water environment. As part of the national Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP), we carry out investigations, monitoring, and improvement projects to keep our rivers, lakes, and coastal waters clean and healthy.

We have identified priority locations, including areas of Pelton where we can make a big impact to reduce the use of storm overflows. These sites were selected in line with guidelines designed to reduce sewage spills, especially in bathing waters and rivers that people love to visit.

Community Hub Admin Team 1 week ago Hi everyoneNorthumbrian Water is committed to reducing storm overflow discharges, to improve local water courses, and protect the environment for future generations.To help us better understand the sewer network, we will be carrying out connectivity surveys in your area on 13 August between the hours of 8:30 - 17:00. The surveys will include lifting manhole covers and using sound testing to verify connections. Works will be carried out at a number of manholes located along The Wynd, in the lane adjacent to the allotments. Please refer to the attached map for details of the survey locations.Please accept this information of an introduction for a survey team from Avove and GeeDee Plant to conduct this work on our behalf.To help us carry out this work smoothly, we kindly ask that you avoid parking vehicles over manhole covers during this time. Community Hub Admin Team 2 months ago 🚧 Important update about planned work in your areaAt Northumbrian Water, we’re committed to protecting the environment 🌱 and making sure our sewer network works reliably for our customers.Following earlier surveys, we’ll soon be carrying out some further investigation work in your area.What will this involve? 🔍 Digging a small number of trial holes in the field at The Wynd and to the rear of Brakenbeds Close. This helps us understand ground conditions and plan the best long-term solution. 🔧 Carrying out a drain survey, which involves lifting a small number of manhole covers to inspect the network.✅ There will be no impact to Brakenbeds Close as part of these works.Our partners AVOVE and MGL will be carrying out this work on our behalf.📅 When will the work take place? Work is planned to start from Monday 22 June and will last approximately one week, between 8:00am and 4:00pm.We’ll do everything we can to keep disruption to a minimum. You may notice some noise and dust, but we’ll keep this as low as possible. 🏡 Access to homes will be maintained at all times.🚚 You may also see a slight increase in vehicle movements, particularly during site set-up. We’d appreciate your support in keeping roads accessible so our teams can work safely and efficiently.🔮 Looking ahead We’re currently planning the next phase of the project, with main construction expected to begin in summer 2026. This will involve digging a small number of trial holes in the field at The Wynd and behind Brakenbeds Close, with no impact to Brakenbeds Close itself.The work will take place from Monday 16 June for about a week, between 8am and 4pm. There may be some noise, dust, and increased vehicle movements, but disruption will be kept to a minimum and access to homes will remain unchanged.Main construction is planned for summer 2026, and more details will be shared closer to the time. We will be carrying out a manhole survey in the lane adjacent to the garages, just off Southfields, on 21 May 2026 between 09:30 and 13:00. The survey will involve lifting the manhole cover to verify connections.Our survey teams from Avove and Gridmark, who will be carrying out this work on our behalf.To enable us to complete the work efficiently, we kindly ask that you avoid parking vehicles near or over manhole covers during this time. Community Hub Admin Team 4 months ago Hi everyone, As you may already be aware, our investment work with our supply partner, Avove, to protect and enhance the environment by upgrading the existing sewer network helping to reduce environmental spills and ensure a more resilient infrastructure for the future, is progressing as planned in the Southfields area of Pelton, within farmland on Brackenbeds Lane.As we begin the next phase of work to connect the newly installed wastewater assets to the network, we will need to implement traffic management measures in the form of Two-way lights on Pelton Lane near to the primary school between 07 - 19 April 2026. These measures are necessary to ensure the safety of both the public and our workforce.We appreciate that this may cause some minor disruption; however, these works are essential and have been carefully scheduled to take place during the school half-term to minimise any inconvenience to pupils, parents, and staff.During this time, you may notice increased activity in the area, including additional vehicles and some noise associated with site operations. Typical working hours will be 8:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. Upcoming works – Pelton areaWe are pleased to confirm that the works within the school field have now been successfully completed. The next phase will continue into the farmer’s field, with overall completion scheduled for May 2026.Between 23 October and 2 November 2025, our team will be working outside Pelton Primary School. To ensure the safety of the public and our workforce, traffic management measures will be in place during this period. We appreciate that this may cause some minor disruption. With that aim in mind, we have been working closely with Pelton Parish Council and Durham County Council to identify opportunities to make a positive impact in the Pelton area, as a thank you for the community’s patience and understanding while our environmental improvement works continue to progress successfully.In full collaboration with our supply partner, Avove, we’re excited to be revitalising land at Southfields to create a welcoming space for leisure and community use. Something we hope the people of Pelton will enjoy and feel proud of for many years to come.On Monday 29 September, we plan to begin work to restore this area. During this time, we kindly ask that the carriageway near Sandyford Road and Fairfield (Close to the Junction) is kept clear of parked vehicles.
