Project: Pegswood Wastewater Treatment Works

At Northumbrian Water, protecting the environment is one of our top priorities. As part of this commitment, we are investing £9.4 million in Pegswood to upgrade our sewer network and improve the local Sewage Treatment Works.

This project forms part of a wider programme to strengthen the resilience of the wastewater network, helping it cope better with future demand and changing weather patterns.

The work includes:

Installing around 1.5km of new pipeline
Upgrading storm overflows in the Pegswood area

Together, these improvements will help reduce the risk of sewer flooding and protect the local environment, now and in the future.

Community Hub Admin Team 1 week ago Good morning,Since our last update, we have successfully completed the establishment of our main site compound, including the installation of our site cabins and the removal of the temporary set-up area.As previously advised, arrangements have now been approved with the local authority to temporarily divert the Public Right of Way. The diversion will be in place from 9 October 2026 for a period of six months. Clear signage will be installed throughout the diversion route to help guide walkers safely, and a map has been provided to show the alternative path.We have also completed a series of ground investigation works to support the development of the Sewer Overflow scheme. These activities included: Utility investigations to identify and avoid existing underground services. CCTV surveys of the existing sewer network. Borehole surveys to gather information on ground conditions. Reinstatement of all excavation areas following completion of the surveys. Community Hub Admin Team 1 month ago Hi everyone, We’ve made a good start on site and have been carrying out important preparation ahead of the main construction phase.Over the past few weeks, we have: 🔹built a new site entrance and access track. 🔹set up our construction compound, which will be used by project teams during the work. 🔹prepared routes that will allow vehicles, equipment and materials to move safely around the site. 🔹 carried out surveys to identify existing underground drainage and other features that could affect future work. 🔹removed sections of hedgerow where necessary to allow safe access to working areas. These activities are helping us prepare the site so that the main construction work can be carried out safely and efficiently. Residents may notice increased activity in the area and more construction vehicles travelling to and from the site. We’ll continue to do everything we can to minimise disruption and thank you for your patience while this work takes place.To keep everyone safe while work is underway, a temporary diversion of part of the public footpath will be introduced later in the project.We currently expect the diversion to be in place from late October. It will remain in place while work is carried out in this area and will be removed once it is no longer needed.Clear signs will be installed to guide walkers along the alternative route, and we'll also publish a map showing the diversion once the details have been finalised and approved.We're working closely with the relevant authorities and will provide further updates, including confirmed dates and route information, as soon as these are available.Thank you for your patience and support while we deliver this important investment for Pegswood.
