Low Wadsworth Environmental Improvements

As part of the Water Industry National Environmental Programme (WINEP), we will be carrying out essential work to enhance the performance of Low Wadsworth wastewater treatment works, which discharges to the River Wear. We will be installing new treatment equipment to help improve the quality of the treated water returned to the environment. This upgrade will support the long-term health of the River Wear and help protect local wildlife and habitats.

The improvement works will cost around £5.5 million and are part of a wider programme of investment taking place across the region. Phosphorous is a nutrient that can encourage excessive algae growth in rivers and streams. Reducing phosphorous levels helps improve water quality and supports biodiversity.

The works will be carried out on behalf of Northumbrian Water by our delivery partner, Costain.

These improvements will help the site continue to operate effectively, improve environmental performance and reduce the risk of future pollution events.
