As part of the Water Industry National Environmental Programme (WINEP), we are investing £3.5m to improve the performance of our sewage treatment works at Great Ayton. The work will involve an upgrade of the current facilities. This will aid NWL in improving the quality of rivers and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Go Vocal Admin7 months ago Hello all, Let’s get up to speed on WINEP Great Ayton STW Storm Capacity:The shaft liner to address the shafts structural issues has been completed. Two pours were undertaken to provide a new reinforced concrete skin inside the existing shaft. All went well and we are now carrying out completion works such as benching the base and the top of liner, waterproofing the unlined rings and looking to start installation of the pipework. Scaffolding inside the shaft has commenced to facilitate this pipework install.As the main shaft structural works are now complete the dewatering has been switched off and removed. This has cleared the area and opened it up to other works.Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control, Automation (MEICA) works have begun to install cabling and pump starters and integrate them with the existing site controls. This works is complete as much as possible until some ducts and the rising main are in place in the shaft area, both of which will be completed ASAP.We are currently aiming to bring the shaft into operation by the end of the month and, whilst there is still significant further works to be undertaken, this will meet our deadline and allow the new asset to further improve water quality in the local area as part of the existing treatment works. Go Vocal Admin8 months ago Hello All,Time for an update on WINEP Great Ayton STW Storm Capacity:After a re-jig of the programme to free up some work for our civils gang we have completed the interceptor chamber. This comprised cutting the existing storm overflow pipe out, constructing the weir wall from reinforced concrete, then benching out the chamber to ensure the wastewater flows in the directions we need it to. We have bunged off the inlet pipe from here to the new storm tank as part of that pipework is not in place and the storm tank/shaft is still being worked on.We have agreed a solution to correct the issues with the shaft and that is now well underway. Due to the ovality of the shaft a new liner is to be poured inside the structure to guarantee its structural strength. This will be done in two pours. The reinforcement for the first pour is complete and the formwork progressing well, so that we hope to have a concrete pour early next week.The dewatering continues to be in operation with EA agreement. We hope to be in a position to switch this off by the end of August. All major design work is now complete and pending review. This will soon allow all major remaining procurement to get underway and further specialist sub-contractor to commence their works.Thanks for taking the time to read.Dave Eden PM.

Go Vocal Admin10 months ago Hello All, Let's get up to date with WINEP Great Ayton STW Storm Capacity.The Interceptor Chamber Works are complete for the time being; the main structure is constructed and backfilled. We are not intending any works in this area until the back end of the job when we will cut out the storm overflow pipe currently running through the centre of the chamber, build the weir wall and bench out (sloped concrete to aid drainage). This work will divert any further storm flows into the new storm tank, but obviously this can happen until the tank/shaft is complete.Unfortunately for the shaft works, the previous assessment of the damage caused by the unexpected boulders was optimistic and the damage is more severe than predicted. This, combined with ongoing effects of that damage and possibly other boulders affecting the shaft from outside during further sinking of the shaft, has caused the shaft to deform out of tolerance. We are currently looking into best options on how to correct the issue.The dewatering continues to be in operation but with reduced flows.Whilst all major design issues are now complete or near so, further work has been paused whilst we investigate and design the solutions to the shaft issue. This solution may have knock on effects meaning some associated items need limited redesign.Thanks for taking the time to read. Dave Eden PM.

Go Vocal Admin11 months ago Afternoon All,WINEP Great Ayton STW Storm Capacity is progressing so it’s time for another update:The Interceptor Chamber Works are continuing, we are now almost ready to pour the walls. Following that including, stripping the shutters, pulling the ground supports and back filling, the chamber will go on hold until we are ready to turn the flows into the new storm tank/shaft.Following some testing and minor alterations, the dewatering solution is performing, which has allowed us to restart the shaft works. We emptied the shaft of water and dug out below the cutting edge, which has allowed us to inspect the shaft for damage which may have been caused by unexpectedly large stones. The damage seems to be superficial so we have recommenced sinking the shaft, though the work may still be slower than hoped due to the stone.The major design items are now very close to completion and most of the critical materials and permanent equipment is either on site or in production off site.The main exception to this is the fabricated steelwork such as handrailing and open mesh platforms, but we do not expect this to cause us any issues.Thanks for taking the time to read.Dave Eden PM.

The base reinforcement in approaching completion, this will be followed by shuttering and concrete pour, which is planned for Thursday.The dewatering solution has not progressed as hoped so we are currently looking into alternatives so that the shaft can proceed, we hope to have a definite way forward in the next few days.In the background, the remaining design work is approaching completion, and all of the major procurement is progressing well.Thanks for taking the time to read.Dave Eden PM.

Go Vocal Admin1 year ago Hi All,Time for an update on WINEP Great Ayton STW Storm Capacity:We have completed the work on the inlet pipework and manhole for the time being, though there will be a revisit to connect the manhole to the new shaft/storm tank and finalise the manhole.We’ve now started the interceptor chamber which will eventually divert the flows from the existing storm overflow into the new shaft/storm tank. That’s excavated and shored, and the blinding has been poured, so we are just waiting for the reinforcement bar to arrive, and we can start on the structural work.The shaft itself is on hold whilst we wait for the dewatering solution to reduce the ground water level, be we have managed to level the shaft out, so it is no longer listing. The dewatering installation is complete and after a couple of false starts we now have a working solution in place which should be able to run continuously until the shaft is complete or at least in a position where the shaft construction no longer requires dewatering.Thanks for taking the time to read.Dave Eden PM.

Go Vocal Admin1 year ago Hi All,Let's get up to date with WINEP Great Ayton STW Storm Tank Capacity:Work to install the dewatering solution to allow the shaft sinking to restart commenced last week and is expected to continue for the next week or so. Once all the wells are in place, they can be connected together, and the ground water can start to be pumped down. This water should come out of the dewatering wells clean, but we will also run it through a Lamella Settlement Tank to make sure any remaining suspended solids have been completely removed before discharge.Again, we do not anticipate either the abstraction or discharge of the water to have any negative effect on the surrounding environment and we have taken all reasonable steps to ensure that that is so.We have also worked on our new solution to feed the new storm tank/shaft without the need for a sizable diversion of existing surface water pipes and new headwall on the riverside. This is all now agreed, and we have laid the first section of feed pipe and constructed a manhole.Next, we will start on the interceptor chamber which will, upon completion of the works, divert the existing storm water for storage in the new storm tank/shaft until the flows have dropped sufficiently for it to be treated as normal.In the meantime, we are installing temporary storm storage tanks and pumps which will triple the current storm water storage volume on site to address the chance of overflows whilst the permanent works are completed.Thanks for taking the time to visit the hub.Dave Eden, Project Manager

Go Vocal Admin1 year ago Hi All,Time for an update on WINEP Great Ayton STW Storm Tank Capacity:We have encountered some unexpected issues with sinking the shaft as we have come across a number of boulders which are preventing us from sinking the shaft underwater as intended. Having exhausted a number of other avenues, we are now progressing with a dewatering option to draw down the ground water in the immediate location of the shaft and allow the shaft to be sunk in the dry. We do not anticipate the dewatering having any detrimental effect on the surrounding environment. Work installing the dewatering solution should commence next week.We now think we have identified a working solution to avoid diverting the existing surface water pipework within site which will much simply the works. Whist the solution is still undergoing the review process; it looks very promising and will remove the need for some significant red tape.We have successfully completed the diversion of the pipework which feeds one of the trickling filters well ahead of schedule. This will hopefully allow us to proceed with the interceptor chamber and inlet pipework to feed the new shaft/storm tank ahead of schedule as well.Thanks for taking the time to visit the hub.Dave Eden, Project Manager

Go Vocal Admin1 year ago Hi All,Let's have another update on WINEP on the Great Ayton STW Storm Tank Capacity:The work sinking the shaft which will form the new storm tank is progressing. The first five rings are in place, four of which are below ground level, and we continue to excavate for the remaining rings.We have completed the various trial holes investigating potential simplification of the works to feed the new storm tank. This is currently in design review, the results of which we should know in the next day or two.Having completed the trial holes, the pipe laying gang have now started the diversion for the pipework which feeds one of the site trickling filters. This needs to be altered to allow the construction of the new interceptor chamber and inlet pipe which, on completion, will send the storm water from the existing storm tanks to the new, giving us our increased capacity.Thanks for taking the time to visit the hub.Dave Eden, Project Manager

Go Vocal Admin1 year ago Hi All.Time for an update on the Great Ayton STW Storm Tank:Our specialist sub-contractor is progressing the shaft for the new storm tank. The cutting ring and first normal ring are in place and the jacking collar complete. The jacks are in place, and we should start sinking the shaft tomorrow when the long reach excavator arrives. The collar and the jacks give us control of the shaft as it sinks, guiding it and allowing us to keep it plumb.We are also continuing various trial holes on site looking at the possibility of a streamlined solution. The potential solution is difficult and may prove to be unworkable, but the potential benefits mean we need to at least examine the possibility.Thanks for taking the time to read this update.Dave Eden, Project Manager

Go Vocal Admin1 year ago Hi All.Lets get up to speed with progress on the Great Ayton STW Storm Tank:After the repairs to the surface water main and some assistance from the farmer it looks like the worst of the localised flooding has been addressed.The access road and working area in the field immediately East/South-East of the treatment works has been completed. This involved erecting a perimeter fence to the work area, stripping the topsoil and laying geo-grid soil reinforcement and stone to create a robust access road and work area. The geo-grid soil reinforcement allowed a reduction in the thickness of the stone and so financial and environmental savings. Stone we don't use doesn't have to be produced or delivered.Following the Christmas break, our specialist sub-contractor has arrived on site to commence installation of the shaft which will act as the new Storm Water Storage Tank. We have hit the ground running and hope to have the first two rings and jacking collar in place early next week.We are also continuing a number of site investigations, from trial pits to duct surveys and ground water monitoring, to ensure we installing the most efficient solution possible.That's all for now, thanks for taking the time to read.Dave Eden, Project Manager

Kathryn Horrocks1 year ago Hi all.I'd like to take this chance to introduce myself; I'm Dave Eden the Esh-Stantec Project Manager who will be running the construction of the new storm tank for Northumbrian Water.We started on site on 28th of October, setting up site cabins, fencing and general work areas.Since then, we have repaired an existing surface water main which was damaged prior to our arrival. The main was both damaged and blocked and as such was contributing to localised flooding immediately outside of the Sewage Treatment Works (STW). The main is now free running so we should see an immediate improvement. Perhaps Storm Bert will give us a demonstration.We have also carried out a number of investigations in the form of trial holes and pipe tracing to ensure the new storm tank and associated pipework do now impact on the existing services and structures. These will likely be ongoing intermittently for some time.As of this week we have agreed access with the landowner for the field immediately east of the STW, so we have started installing temporary fencing and stripping topsoil with a view to installing a stone access road and works area that will give us the room we need to install the new storm shaft. I am Jonathan Shaw, Northumbrian Water's Project Manager and I will be looking after this scheme through to its completion. The scheme will be delivered by Northumbrian Water's delivery partner Esh Stantec.Starting during November 2024 we will be carrying out construction works at Great Ayton Sewage Treatment Works to improve the site's compliance resilience.
