Cullercoats Bathing Water Borehole Drilling

Following on from previous investigations, work is currently underway at Cullercoats Bay to drill groundwater monitoring wells as part of an ongoing investigation into water quality issues. Since 2017, we have been working alongside the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council to understand the causes of bathing water quality deterioration. Previous investigations have shown no evidence that our assets are the primary cause, with contaminated groundwater likely to be a significant factor, however, we are continuing to investigate.

We plan to drill 17 groundwater monitoring wells in total, five of which have already been completed within the new cycle lane above the bay and a further 12 will be drilled over the coming weeks.

Once completed, these wells will help monitor groundwater quality throughout the bathing season, starting in May 2025, and build on previous work, including a hydrogeological study completed in 2023.

This work is part of our commitment to understanding and improving water quality at Cullercoats Bay, our supply partners, Esh-Stantec will be completing the work on behalf of Northumbrian Water, North Tyneside Council and the Environment Agency.

The planned work will start on 9 April 2025 and will be ongoing for a period of approximately 5 weeks, subject to operational changes. The project will be completed in 7 separate locations starting at YS4 (see below for further details on locations) in order to minimise disruption.

Community Hub Admin Team 4 months ago Hi everyone, We just wanted to provide a short update regarding our ongoing work. All boreholes have now been successfully drilled and developed. Groundwater monitoring well sampling commenced in May 2025. However, due to the exceptionally dry conditions experienced over the summer, sampling will continue throughout the wetter winter months to ensure a full 12 months of data is collected for the investigation.
