Project: Cullercoats Investigations

Project Overview

We're continuing our work to better understand and improve water quality at Cullercoats Bay.

Since 2017, we've been working closely with the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council to investigate the factors affecting bathing water quality in the bay. While previous studies have found no evidence that Northumbrian Water assets are the main cause, they suggest that groundwater may play an important role. We're carrying out further investigations to build a clearer picture and identify any opportunities for improvement.

As part of this work, we're installing a number of groundwater monitoring points around the bay. Five have already been completed within the new cycle lane area, and a further twelve will be installed over the coming weeks.

Community Hub Admin Team 4 weeks ago Beverley Terrace Investigation Works Update Hi everyone,As part of our ongoing bathing water quality investigations in Cullercoats, we will be carrying out a further phase of exploratory work from 27 July 2026 at the front of Beverley Terrace.The work will involve excavations on the pavement outside 58 and 59 Beverley Terrace. The road and pavement will remain open throughout the works.To ensure the safety of the public and our workforce, the two parking bays closest to No. 59 Beverley Terrace will be temporarily suspended while the work is underway. We kindly ask residents not to park in these bays from the evening of 26 July 2026.We would like to thank residents for their continued patience and understanding while these important investigations are carried out.Thank you, The Project Team

Community Hub Admin Team 3 months ago Hi everyone, We wanted to provide a further update on the work Northumbrian Water is carrying out in your area in conjunction with North Tyneside Council and the Environment Agency.We’re sorry that the works have taken longer than originally expected and for any ongoing inconvenience this may be causing. The road to the rear of Beverley Terrace has now reopened; however, we are continuing to work in the area as we complete the remaining activities.We now expect all site works to be completed by 15 May.We appreciate that even with the road open, ongoing activity can still cause disruption, and we apologise for any continued disturbance. Our teams are working hard to finish the work as quickly and safely as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.The Project Team

Community Hub Admin Team 4 months ago Hi everyone,We just wanted to provide an update on work Northumbrian Water is currently carrying out in your area in conjunction with North Tyneside Council and the Environment Agency.As part of our investigations into bathing water quality issues in Cullercoats, we are currently undertaking exploratory excavation works to the rear of Beverley Terrace. These investigations are an important step in helping us better understand and address the issues identified.To allow this work to be completed safely, a temporary road closure is in place to the rear of Beverley Terrace, between John Street and Marden Avenue. This road closure will remain in place until 28 April 2026. While the road will reopen from this date, work in the area will continue until 5 May 2026.Our working hours on site are 8:00am to 5:00pm. Once all works in this area have been completed, we will provide a further update.We understand that road closures can be inconvenient and would like to reassure residents that we are doing everything we can to minimise disruption. Our site team has also confirmed that if household bins are placed at their usual collection point during the road closure, they will ensure they are moved to a suitable location so they can still be emptied as normal.Alongside these works, we are continuing with our monitoring and sampling regime as part of the wider investigation. This ongoing sampling will allow us to collect a full and reliable set of data over time.We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause and thank you for your patience while these important investigations continue. Community Hub Admin Team 8 months ago Hi everyone, We just wanted to provide a short update regarding our ongoing work. All boreholes have now been successfully drilled and developed. Groundwater monitoring well sampling commenced in May 2025. However, due to the exceptionally dry conditions experienced over the summer, sampling will continue throughout the wetter winter months to ensure a full 12 months of data is collected for the investigation. Once the sampling data has been finalised, we will provide a further update. Thank you,The Project Team

Go Vocal Admin1 year ago Hi all, Just want to provide a quick update on our work in the Cullercoats area. As you may have noticed we have now completed the drilling work at all Borehole locations. Thank you on the behalf of the whole project team for the patience you have shown whilst the works were taking place. Once again we do apologise for any inconvenience and for any disruption this may have caused throughout the duration of the project. We have now moved onto the monitoring stage and will continue to provide updates when appropriate. Many Thanks from the Project Team

Go Vocal Admin1 year ago Hi all,We are experiencing some delays due to unforeseen ground conditions & rock formation, which has meant each location is taken more time than we initially anticipated. Currently our expectations are that all work will be completed by the 6th of June 2025, however, again this will depend on operational changes.We sincerely apologies for an disruption or inconvenience that the ongoing work may be causing you.Please see below an updated timescales and dates for each location: YS4 - Now completed YS1 – Commencing on the 21st of May 2025 YS 7 – Work now completed, currently demobilising from site YS 8 – Work currently in progress YS6 – Work currently in progress CM1 - Work now completed, currently demobilising from site YS5 – Commencing on the 14th of May 2025

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the original dates and some locations have changed please refer to “The location of Boreholes” section above for updated details. Traffic Management will be used throughout our works. Residents impacted will be updated regularly.Drilling at YS4 location.
