We're investing in improvements at our pumping station on Dunstanburgh Road to help protect it from the effects of coastal erosion. This work will help keep our wastewater network operating reliably for the future, reducing the risk of pollution and helping to protect the local environment and coastline for the community.

We are investing £1.5 million in Craster to protect the land around our pumping station near Dunstanburgh Road following damage caused by coastal erosion. By strengthening and protecting this area, we can help ensure the pumping station continues to operate reliably, protecting local waterways and supporting the wastewater services that homes and businesses rely on every day.

Community Hub Admin Team 2 days ago HelloWork is progressing well on the erosion protection measures, with fill material currently being installed to help strengthen and stabilise the bankside.In preparation for the next stage of work, adjustments to the site access and haul road are also underway to support ongoing activities and maintain safe site operations.We will continue to minimise disruption wherever possible and will continue to provide further updates as the project progresses.The Project Team

Community Hub Admin Team 1 week ago HelloWe're pleased to share that work is continuing to progress well on site, with the team focusing on preparing the area for the erosion protection scheme.To improve access and create a safer working surface, sand has been laid along the access road and ramp. Two deliveries of rock have arrived on site, supporting the next phase of the project. Work has continued at the southern revetment, where rock is being carefully broken out to help create the required profile for the scheme. Additional rock has also been placed to the south of the working area to help stabilise the bankside.This week, the team will continue preparing the site, including filling, and shaping the bankside. Further groundwork will also be carried out to enable the installation of the protective materials that form part of the erosion protection works.Thank you for your continued patience and support while these important works are carried out. Community Hub Admin Team 2 weeks ago Hello, We hope you all enjoyed the RNLI fundraising event. ⚓️🎉Following the event, the site compound and fencing were reinstated last week, and work on site is continuing.With confirmation that the sand martins have now fledged, work has recommenced on site. The excavator has been fitted with a grab attachment to enable the movement and placement of the large rock armour stones.This week, the team will be using specialist equipment to break out the existing rock to form the toe of the proposed revetment, an important stage in preparing the coastal defence structure. During this work, there may be an increase in noise levels. We will continue to work hard to minimise disruption while these activities are carried out.Large boulders and concrete have been moved from the foreshore to behind the harbour wall, and the access ramp and road have now been completed along the full length of the proposed revetment.If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.Thank you for your continued patience.The Project Team

Community Hub Admin Team 1 month ago Hello,Following the information shared on Friday 10 July, we wanted to provide you with a further update regarding the construction works.As previously advised, an active colony of sand martins has been identified nesting within the coastal bank adjacent to the proposed work area. As this species and its active nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, construction activities remain suspended to ensure the nesting colony is protected.Our ecology team is continuing to assess and monitor the area to determine when it is appropriate for works to recommence. This assessment is ongoing and is being carried out in accordance with environmental legislation and best practice. At this stage, we anticipate that it will be a minimum of three weeks before we are able to return to site. Once the ecology team has completed the next stage of the assessment, we will review the findings and provide you with a further update after this three-week period, including any confirmed timescales for returning to site.We would like to thank the Craster community for your continued patience and understanding while we work through this process. Community Hub Admin Team 1 month ago HelloWe wanted to share an update with you ahead of the weekend following the commencement of our construction works. An active colony of sand martins has been identified nesting within the coastal bank immediately adjacent to the area where the proposed works are due to take place.Sand martins and their active nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It is an offence to damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, and works have therefore been temporarily suspended to ensure that the sand martin nesting colony is protected. While ecological surveys were undertaken in advance of the works, sand martins are a highly transient species and colonies can establish rapidly in suitable habitat. As a result, active nesting burrows may not always be present or visible at the time surveys are carried out. We are working closely with our ecological specialists to fully understand the situation and to ensure that any actions taken are appropriate, compliant with environmental legislation and aligned with best practice.As a precaution, construction work will not continue next week while further ecological assessment is undertaken. We appreciate your patience and understanding while this process is completed.We are sorry for the disruption this may cause to the Craster community and recognise that this is not an ideal situation. Community Hub Admin Team 1 month ago Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read our first update since Esh-Stantec began establishing the site working area.Since 29 June, our teams have been working hard setting up the site compound and associated working areas. During the first week, site cabins and generators were delivered, and perimeter fencing was installed to secure the site.We are committed to keeping disruption to the local community to an absolute minimum. To help achieve this, we have implemented a solar-powered battery generator, which will significantly reduce the amount of time the generator is required to operate. The generator is programmed to run only during working hours, between 8:00am and 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.This week, work has continued completing the site compound, and construction of the access ramp and haul road to the beach is now underway.We recognise that the delivery of the excavator resulted in some temporary delays along Dunstanburgh Road while the machine was unloaded and moved safely into the site. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and would like to thank residents and road users for their continued patience and understanding.We will continue to provide weekly updates as the project progresses and appreciate the community's ongoing support. It was great to meet you in person, introduce members of the team, and answer your questions about the upcoming work.Your questions have been noted, and we will be sharing further information with the Parish Council over the next couple of weeks.We had originally planned to begin mobilising our working area on the 8th June. Community Hub Admin Team 3 months ago Hi everyone, We’d like to let residents know that Esh Stantec will be carrying out a vehicle trial along Dunstanburgh Road on Wednesday 13 May, between 10.30am and 11.30am.The trial will use the wagons proposed for our upcoming works. We have arranged with MGL, who operate the wagons from Longhoughton Quarry, to drive along Dunstanburgh Road and, where possible, carry out a three‑point turn at the access to the North Pier of the harbour, before returning along Dunstanburgh Road.If a three‑point turn cannot be safely carried out, the wagon may need to reverse out under the supervision of a vehicle marshal.We kindly ask pedestrians and road users to remain vigilant during this time, and we thank you for your cooperation.You will shortly receive a letter inviting you to attend the parish council meeting at 6pm on Thursday 28 May, at Craster Memorial Hall, Whin Hill, Craster, NE66 3TP. Go Vocal Admin1 year ago I would like to introduce myself. I am Rowena Usher - Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager and I will be looking after this scheme through to its completion. At this early stage, we will be carrying out survey work along the coastline adjacent to Dunstanburgh Road and along W End Road following the route of the current underground network. This will help us plan the most suitable solution with a detailed understanding of the physical and natural environment.Once we have more clarification about the proposed solution, we will provide updates on our plans and proposals with you on this Community Hub. Subject to approvals, we expect to begin construction work in Autumn 2026. The team will post regular updates in advance of and throughout the construction phase of the project. If you have any queries or want to make us aware of any additional assistance you require from us then please post a comment within the Community Hub and one of the project team will get back to you.
