Water Industry National Environment Programme

The Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) assists water companies to identify and deliver improvements that protect and enhance rivers, watercourses, and local habitats.

It guides investment into projects that improve water quality, reduce pollution, strengthen resilience to climate change, and create healthier environments for communities and wildlife.

Developed by the Environment Agency in partnership with Defra, Ofwat and water companies, WINEP sets out the environmental actions that water companies are required to deliver.

• improving water quality in rivers and watercourses
• reducing pollution and its impact on the environment
• reducing sewer overflows and improving wastewater treatment
• protecting and enhancing habitats and biodiversity
• supporting sustainable water resources and climate resilience
• managing environmental and flood risks more effectively.
