The Northumbria Integrated Drainage Partnership (NIDP) is an award-winning partnership bringing together local authorities across the North East, the Environment Agency and Northumbrian Water to help reduce flood risk and improve drainage for communities.
Created from the Tyneside Sustainable Sewerage Study, the partnership takes a joined-up approach to managing water from rivers, surface water, and sewers. By working together, partners can better understand how local drainage systems operate, identify areas most at risk of flooding and deliver solutions that make communities more resilient.
Through jointly funded studies and improvement projects, NIDP is investing in long-term measures that help reduce flooding, support sustainable drainage, and relieve the pressure on existing sewer networks.
Backed by significant investment, the partnership is helping to create a safer and more sustainable future for people and places across the North East.
📍 This work includes:
- combining multi-agency funding and engineering data to fix complex, cross-boundary flooding issues that could not be solved by any of the partners individually
- sustainable drainage by promoting sustainable interventions alongside traditional drainage and new surface water sewers
- storm overflow spill reductions due to lower volumes of rainwater entering combined sewers which will then decrease storm overflow use
