🚰 Planned Improvements at Gunnerton Water Treatment Works
We're investing more than £10 million in improvements at Gunnerton Water Treatment Works to help provide a safe, reliable water supply for customers in Gunnerton, Hexham, the Tyne Valley, and surrounding communities.
✅ Why are we carrying out this work?
The improvements will modernise parts of the treatment works and help ensure we can continue providing high-quality drinking water for years to come.
📅 When will work take place?
Our current programme is:
- 📝 Planning application submitted – Summer 2026
- 🚧 Site setup begins – Autumn 2026
- ✅ Expected completion – Summer 2029
We'll continue to share updates as the project progresses.
🚗 Will there be any disruption?
Some construction activity will be visible around the site, including deliveries and building works.
At times, temporary traffic management or short-term road closures may be needed to safely carry out specific activities. If this happens, we'll provide advance notice wherever possible and work hard to minimise disruption for residents, businesses, and road users.
📞 BT Openreach works
Separate to our project, BT Openreach plan to carry out work in the area during August 2026 to move overhead cables underground. This will involve temporary road closures, and local residents will receive further information directly from BT Openreach.
🌿 Looking after the local area
We'll work closely with our construction partner, Mott MacDonald Bentley, to minimise noise, dust, and other impacts wherever possible. Protecting the local environment and supporting local communities remains a key priority throughout the project.
