Project Update 24/10/2025
From "Felton Environmental Improvements"
Go to the project
Hi everyone,
As part of our ongoing commitment, we’re carrying out investigation work to help reduce the impact of storm overflow discharges.
To support this, a survey team from Mantank will be carrying out Connectivity and Impermeable Area Surveys on our behalf, starting from 3 November 2025 for four weeks. These surveys will help us assess the condition and performance of our existing sewerage network.
Employees of Northumbrian Water or Mantank will not require access into your home at any time during these investigations
Thank you
The Project Team

I welcome the current survey assessing the condition and performance of the sewerage network that feeds into the Felton Sewage Treatment Works. However, I would like to highlight a long-standing issue affecting the village of Swarland, which forms part of this catchment.
Swarland has experienced repeated sewerage overflows over several years, and there is broad local agreement that the existing sewer network does not have adequate capacity to accommodate additional connections. Residents are concerned that without meaningful assessment and action, these problems will continue or worsen.
Could NWL please confirm whether this survey will specifically address the known capacity constraints within Swarland and whether its findings will inform plans to prevent future overflows and ensure the network is fit for current and future demand?
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Hi Ken,
Thank you for getting in touch and sharing your concerns about Swarland.
The surveys you mentioned are part of the Felton Storm Overflow Project. This project is focused on meeting environmental regulations by reducing storm overflow spills to fewer than 10 per year at Felton Sewage Treatment Works and Longframlington Combined Sewer Overflow.
We understand that the flooding issues in Swarland are mainly due to limited capacity in the sewer pipes, especially around the pipe bridge. However, this is not part of this project. This project will focus on Storm Overflows as mentioned above, we will continue to look for future opportunities to address these concerns.
Thank you for raising this important matter, and please let us know if you have any further questions.
