Project Update 22/10/2025

Hello all,

We’d like to share an update with you ahead of the Springwell Village Residents Association (SVRA) meeting on Wednesday 22 October.

Project Timelines

We’re now in a key phase of the project, with backfilling and reinstatement progressing under a carefully managed wagon movement plan. While there have been delays, which are not unusual for a project of this scale, we appreciate your patience and remain on track to complete by April 2026. We’ll keep you informed of any changes.

Reservoir Roof Design

The switch from a grass-covered roof to a gravel finish reflects updated industry best practice—improving water quality protection, inspection access, and long-term maintenance. With the roof now complete, it will remain as designed.

We are carrying out a range of ground-level ecological enhancements, including native planting and dedicated habitat features to support biodiversity. We remain committed to enhancing the surrounding environment through visual screening, landscaping, and ecological improvements.

Security Fence

As confirmed on 26 September, the fence height will be reduced from 2.4m to 1.8m. Following community feedback, the fence line has also been reviewed. While the northern section will remain for operational reasons, the eastern and western sections will be moved inward to create more public space.

Northern Access Road

We understand some disappointment around the decision to use Tarmac instead of Grasscrete. Tarmac offers greater durability, safety, and ease of maintenance—especially in wet conditions and under heavy vehicle use. Grasscrete would require more upkeep and may not perform as well over time.

Wagon Movement

The new entry-only access road at the North East corner, connecting to Mount Park Road, supports safer and more efficient vehicle movements. It also helps reduce wagon idle time and avoid delays during winter.

We’re actively managing movements to minimise disruption:

• Mount Lane remains the primary delivery route; North East access is used only when needed.
• No queuing on public roads.
• Banksmen guide vehicles safely.
• Dust suppression, daily road sweeping, and wheel washers are in place.
• Movements are reduced during peak traffic times.
• Regular reviews ensure operations remain safe and efficient.

We’re working with the local council to maintain Mount Lane, with temporary pothole repairs underway and resurfacing scheduled post-completion.

Landscaping & Biodiversity

Landscaping is an important priority. Together with MMB, we’ve developed a plan to increase and improve biodiversity on the site from its original condition. We’ll discuss this in more detail at the SVRA meeting.

Key Highlights:

• 28 new trees (oak, field maple, cherry, goat willow).
• 3:1 tree replacement along the pipeline route.
• Hedgerow restoration to achieve up to 4x the meterage lost.
• Species-rich grassland and wetland planting to support pollinators.
• Five-year maintenance commitment for hedges on-site.

We’re also exploring community engagement in early 2026, including:

• Nature-based activities with local schools (e.g. bug hotels).
• Tree adoption dedication to build lasting community connections.

Ground Levels & Landscaping

Excavation reached the required depth, and the reservoir’s elevation remains as originally planned—so there’s no impact on planning consents or expected ground levels.

Once backfilling is complete, the ground will be graded and landscaped to blend with the surrounding environment.
