Project Update 10 August 2026

🚧 Work Due to Start at Sedgeletch

Following the completion of our preparation work, we are now getting ready to begin the main construction phase of the project.

📅 When will work take place?

Subject to final approvals, construction is expected to begin from 10 August 2026 and continue until summer 2027.

Working alongside our partner Avove, we'll be carrying out improvements that will help ensure our treatment works continues to serve the local community while protecting the environment.

👷 What work will be taking place?

The project includes:

• Building a new pumping station within Sedgeletch Sewage Treatment Works
• Installing around 3.7km of new underground pipework
• Creating a new discharge point at the River Wear for treated water

To complete this work safely and efficiently, temporary construction compounds will be set up at several locations, including:

• Sedgeletch Sewage Treatment Works
• Elba Park
• The Lambton Estate area
• Near the River Wear outfall location

🚦 How might this affect you?

During the work, you may notice:

• Increased construction activity in the area
• Construction vehicles and machinery
• Some additional noise during working hours

Our normal working hours will be 8:00am to 6:00pm, although these may occasionally vary when needed.

🚗 Traffic management

Temporary traffic management will be required on the A182 as part of the project.

Current plans include:

• A temporary slip road closure for approximately 7 to 8 weeks
• A temporary lane closure on the A182 for approximately 5 weeks

These arrangements are subject to final approval and may change as plans are finalised. We'll share further updates before any restrictions are introduced.

🌳 Access and local areas

As work progresses, you may see activity within Elba Park and the surrounding area.

There may also be some temporary changes to access around the Lambton Estate while construction compounds are established. Once this initial work is complete, any impact on access is expected to reduce significantly.

We're also reviewing whether a temporary footpath diversion may be needed near the River Wear. If this becomes necessary, we'll provide further information in advance.
