We wanted to share an update with you ahead of the weekend following the commencement of our construction works.

An active colony of sand martins has been identified nesting within the coastal bank immediately adjacent to the area where the proposed works are due to take place.

Sand martins and their active nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It is an offence to damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, and works have therefore been temporarily suspended to ensure that the sand martin nesting colony is protected.

While ecological surveys were undertaken in advance of the works, sand martins are a highly transient species and colonies can establish rapidly in suitable habitat. As a result, active nesting burrows may not always be present or visible at the time surveys are carried out.

We are working closely with our ecological specialists to fully understand the situation and to ensure that any actions taken are appropriate, compliant with environmental legislation and aligned with best practice.

As a precaution, construction work will not continue next week while further ecological assessment is undertaken. We appreciate your patience and understanding while this process is completed.

We are sorry for the disruption this may cause to the Craster community and recognise that this is not an ideal situation. Please be assured that we are treating this as a priority and will provide a further update once the next steps have been confirmed.
