From "Willington Sewage Treatment Works"

Go to the project

Northumbrian Water is investing £6.7 million to upgrade Willington Wastewater Treatment Works as part of our ongoing commitment to improving the local environment. The upgrade will improve how wastewater is treated, helping to protect and enhance the water quality of the River Wear.

A key part of this scheme is the installation of new phosphorus removal processes. Phosphorus occurs naturally in wastewater but when it enters rivers in excess amounts, it can encourage the growth of algae and aquatic plants. This can reduce oxygen levels in the water, making it harder for fish and other wildlife to thrive. The improvements at Willington will reduce the amount of phosphorus discharged to the river, helping to meet tighter environmental standards and support a healthier river ecosystem.

The work will be delivered by our supply partner, Costain, who will be carrying out the design and construction on our behalf.

The main construction works are currently planned to begin in February 2026 and are expected to last around 12 months. All activity will take place within the treatment works and nearby operational areas. There will be no impact on your water or sewerage services, and we will not need access to private properties.

To find out more about the scheme and to meet the project team, customers are invited to attend our drop-in event on Wednesday 14th January at Parkside Academy Comprehensive (Hall Lane Estate, Crook, DL15 0QF) between 18:00 and 20:00.

You can click on the event listing on this Community Hub page to add the Willington Customer Event directly to your phone or digital calendar.
